A compressor pushes room air through a molecular sieve, which holds the nitrogen back and lets the oxygen through to a product tank, then down the tubing to you. Continuous flow. It delivers a steady, set rate of oxygen whether you are breathing in or out, which is what most overnight prescriptions require. Pulse dose devices only release oxygen when they sense a breath, which suits daytime mobility but is not generally recommended for sleeping. Once a month, or sooner if the room is dusty. Switch the unit off at the wall, slide the filter out, wash it in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse it and let it dry completely before it goes back in. Never run the concentrator with a wet filter or with the filter missing. Wipe the cabinet over at the same time. A clogged filter makes the machine work harder, which uses more power and makes more noise, so it is worth staying on top of.

The humidifier bottle bubbles the oxygen through sterile or distilled water on the way out, which makes extended use far more comfortable.
