Most portable concentrators are a box on a strap that knocks against your hip with every step. CAIRE shaped this one to follow the line of your body, so it sits still while you walk. At 2.3 kg with the standard pack it is light enough to forget about, and the settings, the battery and the dose it gives you are all worked out to keep you out of the house for longer.

Caire FreeStyle Comfort battery life: 8 cell vs 16 cell
CAIRE publish a duration for every setting on both pack sizes, so you can find yours and know whether the day fits on a charge before you leave. One detail worth having in mind is that these times hold whatever your breathing rate is doing, which is not true of every pulse concentrator.

It waits for your breath
How the Caire FreeStyle Comfort Portable Oxygen Concentrator senses each breath
UltraSense is the trigger. It reads the small pressure change at the cannula as you start to breathe in, and releases the pulse then rather than on a timer. A shallow breath still counts, which matters as the day wears on and you tire.
autoDOSE is the backstop. If the device stops sensing you and a no breath alarm comes up, it does not simply sit there waiting. It begins pulsing on its own at 20 breaths a minute on whatever setting you are running, and keeps going until it picks your breathing up again. A cannula that slips while you are dozing in a chair does not leave you with nothing.
There is nothing to switch on for either of them. Both run from the moment you power the unit up, and the screen keeps up its end as well. Large type on a colour display, a keypad that glows in the dark, and the flow setting and battery percentage side by side, so there is nothing to work out in a dim room.
Mains, car and battery

On battery
The 8 cell pack clips into the base and the 16 cell pack takes its place, adding about 25 mm to the height and 400 g. A flat 8 cell pack recharges in 3.5 hours and a 16 cell in 6 hours, either in the unit or on the optional desktop charger. CAIRE rate the packs at 300 charge cycles.
At home
The AC supply takes 100 to 240V at 50 or 60Hz, which covers Australian mains. The unit runs and charges at the same time, whether it is switched on or off.
In the car
The DC supply takes 11 to 18V from a vehicle outlet and runs every setting. Start the engine before you plug the unit in, and unplug it when you switch the engine off, because leaving it connected will pull the car battery down.
In the air
CAIRE state the FreeStyle Comfort meets FAA guidelines for use on board commercial aircraft. There is an airplane mode built into the menu, which the section below explains.
A backup oxygen supply is worth having for power outages or faults. Your clinician should confirm that your prescribed setting suits the trip, including at altitude.

Lithium ion batteries
Flying with the CAIRE FreeStyle Comfort portable oxygen concentrator
CAIRE state the FreeStyle Comfort meets FAA guidelines for use on board commercial aircraft, and most airlines will carry it. Getting the paperwork and the battery rating checked beforehand is what avoids a problem at the gate.
Battery rating
CAIRE publish the pack capacity as 6700 mAh for the 8 cell and 13400 mAh for the 16 cell, but they do not print a watt hour figure, and watt hours are what airlines ask about. The number is on the battery label. Read it and check it against the airline, because over 100Wh needs their dangerous goods approval and caps you at two spares, and over 160Wh is not accepted in the cabin at all.
Airline approval
Meeting the FAA guidelines is not an automatic yes. CAIRE say to contact the carrier at least 48 hours before departure. Qantas and Virgin Australia both want a medical clearance form completed by your doctor, submitted around five days ahead, and Qantas keeps its own list of accepted devices.
How much to carry
Plan for 150% of your total travel time, not just the flight. Count ground time at both ends, security, connections and a fair allowance for delays. Work from the table above and the setting you actually fly on, then add a spare pack if the sums are close.
Airplane mode
Switch it on before you plug into an aircraft outlet, by holding the up and down buttons together for five seconds until you hear a long beep and the aeroplane symbol appears. The unit runs on battery alone until you do. One thing to plan around is that the packs will not charge in airplane mode, so aircraft power extends your run time rather than topping you back up.
Spare packs
Carry-on baggage only, never checked. Each spare goes in its original packaging or its own bag with the terminals covered, so nothing can short against keys or coins.
Bus, train and boat
Contact the carrier before you travel and ask whether power outlets are available at your seat.

Oxygen should only be given according to the prescription and guidance of a certified healthcare provider. Pulse dose devices must be tested by your healthcare provider to confirm they suit your treatment and to set the correct level.
Settings are not litres per minute. Setting 2 delivers 420 mL a minute, not 2 L/min. Pulse dose delivery is not generally recommended for use while sleeping, as it may not detect shallow breathing. This device is not intended for life support and does not monitor your oxygen saturation.

CAIRE FreeStyle ComfortWhich battery pack should I choose?+
It comes down to how long you are out against how much you want to carry. The 8 cell pack keeps the unit at 2.3 kg and runs up to 8 hours on setting 1 or 4 hours on setting 2. The 16 cell pack takes it to 2.7 kg and roughly doubles the time. If most of your outings are a few hours and you can charge in the car, the 8 cell is enough. If you fly, or you are out from morning to evening, the 16 cell saves you carrying a spare.
What are UltraSense and autoDOSE?+
The two things the device does on its own. UltraSense is the trigger, reading the pressure change at the cannula as you breathe in and releasing the pulse at that moment rather than on a timer, so a shallow breath still gets picked up. autoDOSE covers the opposite case. If a no breath alarm comes up, the unit starts pulsing by itself at 20 breaths a minute on your current setting until it senses you breathing again.
Can I take it on a plane?+
CAIRE state it meets FAA guidelines for use on board commercial aircraft. Australian airlines run their own clearance on top of that, so call them at least 48 hours before you fly and ask what paperwork they want. Take enough charged packs for 150% of your total travel time, and remember the packs do not charge in airplane mode.
Can I use it while sleeping?+
Ask your clinician before you rely on it overnight. Pulse dose devices are not generally recommended for sleep, because they may not reliably detect shallow breathing. The FreeStyle Comfort is pulse only, so there is no continuous flow mode to fall back on. If your prescription calls for continuous flow, the CAIRE Eclipse 5 and the GCE Zen-O both do it.
Do I need a prescription?+
Yes. We dispatch the FreeStyle Comfort once we have verified a valid prescription, or proof of professional or business status for clinics, aged care providers and other business buyers. It is pulse dose only, delivering 210 to 1,050 mL a minute across settings 1 to 5, so your healthcare provider needs to test you on the device to confirm it suits your treatment and set your level. If your prescription calls for continuous flow, the Eclipse 5 and the Zen-O both provide it.
How loud is it?+
CAIRE publish 39.9 dB(A) on setting 2 in their specification sheet, and their user manual lists a maximum of 43 dB(A) on the same setting. Either way it sits below the level of a quiet office and it is one of the quieter units we stock. Higher settings work the compressor harder and you will hear the difference as you move up the range.
Can I run it in the car?+
Yes. A DC lead is included, rated 11 to 18V for a standard vehicle outlet, and every setting runs on it. The pack charges while you drive, so a long trip can start with a flat battery and end with a full one.
What maintenance does it need?+
Almost none. CAIRE describe the device as maintenance free, and the filters inside are built to last the life of the unit. Your job is the two gross particle filters on the front, which need cleaning at least once a week in warm soapy water and drying fully before they go back in. Anything beyond that comes to our technical services team here in Australia on 1300 881 824.

A cylinder holds a fixed volume of oxygen and runs out, so the week gets planned around refills and deliveries. A concentrator draws in the air around you, strips out the nitrogen and delivers oxygen at therapeutic purity, so it only stops when the power does. There is nothing to refill and nothing to return.
