Resuscitation Masks: What They Are & How to Use Them

Also known as resuscitation masks, CPR masks help prevent the transfer of body fluids from mouth to mouth. For first responders, these masks play a significant role in protecting their health and safety as they perform lifesaving procedures.

To learn more about CPR equipment, when to employ one, and how to use resuscitation masks correctly, keep reading below.

What is a resuscitation mask?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation — or CPR — is an emergency procedure performed when a person has stopped breathing or no longer has a heartbeat — for example, when someone has had a heart attack or a near-drowning experience. The person administering CPR does so by alternating between chest compressions and forcing air into the lungs.

Because this procedure requires mouth-to-mouth contact, CPR can put both the caregiver and the patient at risk of exposure to body fluids. This means that personal protective equipment (PPE) is an absolute must; one of the most important PPE items is a mask.

A resuscitation mask works by creating an airtight seal over the injured person’s mouth and nose. A one-way valve allows air to flow into the victim’s lungs while also keeping you cut off from the patient’s air, spit, blood, vomit or other fluids. Not only does this help keep the nose closed, but it also protects against the transmission of bacteria, viruses, and diseases during this procedure.

There are several different types of masks available, including CPR pocket masks for children, infants, and adults.

How to use a resuscitation mask

A CPR mask prevents dangerous mouth-to-mouth contact while still allowing a first responder to administer aid swiftly and effectively. Learning how to use a resuscitation mask is incredibly easy and requires just a few simple steps. Begin with chest compressions to help stimulate blood flow throughout the body. After completing at least 30 compressions, you may need to begin rescue breathing.

  • Step 1: Attach the mask to the patient. The narrow or pointy end should fit snugly over the nose.
  • Step 2: Press the mask against the skin of the face to create a tight seal that will keep the air in.
  • Step 3: Gently tilt the head back to open up the airway. As you do this, keep pressing against the mask to ensure that it is still sealed against the patient’s face.
  • Step 4: Begin giving rescue breaths, making sure that the patient’s chest rises as you do so. Offer 2 breaths after doing 30 chest compressions.
  • Step 5: Repeat step 4 until trained medical personnel arrive, or until the patient exhibits signs of life, such as breathing, sounds, or movements.

The benefits of resuscitation masks

Using a resuscitation mask during CPR will not make the procedure more effective. However, while CPR masks are not necessary to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, they do offer many benefits. They:

  • Are small and light, making them a highly portable tool
  • Help prevent germs, bacteria, viruses, and diseases from transferring to the responder
  • Prevent the rescuer from coming into contact with blood, saliva, vomit, and other body fluids
  • Provide peace of mind for caregivers
  • Can help make mouth-to-mouth less intimate and more clinical for caregivers

This is why most emergency personnel and many non-medical personnel choose to carry a portable CPR mask; you never know when disaster may strike and you’re called upon to provide care to someone in need. When that happens, this small mask offers extensive protection and ensures that you can offer your assistance without worrying about compromising your health.
