What is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a high grade medical gas made of 100% Nitrous Oxide. It is a non-flammable, colourless oxidising gas with a slightly sweetish taste and odour and commonly stored as a compressed gas until use by medical professionals.
Uses and Applications
Medical Nitrous Oxide is used for general anaesthesia or pain relief. It is usually given with another anaesthetic and oxygen during surgery, either via a tube placed down your throat by an anaesthetist, or given with oxygen via a mask by your doctor or dentist. Medical Nitrous Oxide works by causing unconsciousness (deep sleep) before and during surgery and by relieving pain for certain procedures. It is also used as a freezing agent in cryosurgery.
- Sedation or Anesthesia/Analgesia
- Freezing agent in cryosurgery
Nitrous Oxide is a useful gas in medical surgery and can be used for both sedation or analgesia/anesthesia purposes as well as a freezing agent in cyrosurgery. For working with this specific gas a mixer is commonly required to mix the flow of both Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen to the patient. Along with the mixer a specific Nitrous Oxide regulator is required called the Series O Nitrous Oxide Regulator that will attach to the gas bottle or wall outlet. As well as a specific regulator the correct hosing is required and, if you are using a wall outlet system, then the correct specific wall outlet for this gas.
