There are many different types of medical gas. Each has their own purpose and advantages but when used incorrectly, the gas can cause a detrimental impact on the body.
If you work with medical gas then it’s imperative you understand the different types and what each is used for.

Oxygen is colourless, odourless and tasteless. It will vigorously support combustion and sustain life. It is supplied as a compressed gas in high pressure metal cylinders. In respiratory therapy, medical grade oxygen is administered to increase the amount of oxygen and thus decrease the amount of other gases circulating in the blood.
Uses and Applications of Medical Oxygen Safety Precautions when using Medical Oxygen Medical Oxygen patients may experience coughing, breathing difficulties, dizziness, convulsions and loss of consciousness after several hours of exposure of Medical Oxygen. Nitrous Oxide is a non-flammable, colourless oxidising gas with a slightly sweetish taste and odour. Nitrous Oxide is widely used as a base anaesthetic generally supplemented by other agents. It is used extensively for relative analgesia and as a freezing agent in cryosurgery. Uses and Applications of Nitrous Oxide Sedation or Anesthesia/Analgesia Safety Precautions when using Nitrous Oxide Do not drive a vehicle or operate machinery for at least 24 hours after using Medical Nitrous Oxide. Medical AirAir, the earth's natural atmosphere, is a non flammable, colourless and odourless mixture of gases in which nitrogen and oxygen predominate. It is supplied as a gas in high pressure in steel or aluminium cylinders. Medical grades of air are used for human respiration in breathing apparatus, drive suction venturis and for surgical tools. Carbon Dioxide is a non-flammable, colourless and odourless gas. It is liquefiable under pressure, with refrigerant properties in the liquid phase and is supplied in cylinders as a liquid under its own vapour pressure of approx. 5,000kPa at 15C. Medical applications for Carbon Dioxide include its use as a pure gas or in specialised mixtures with other gases in stimulation of breathing & anaesthesia. Uses and Applications of Medical Carbon Dioxide Sedation or Anesthesia/Analgesia Safety Precautions when using Medical Carbon Dioxide In the event you breathe in too much Medical Carbon Dioxide (more than 6%). In this case, you’re highly likely to suffer from headaches, confusion, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, rapid and heavy breathing. At even higher levels of Medical Carbon Dioxide (more than 8- 10%) you will be dizzy and become unconscious. At very high levels (more than 30%) in addition to unconsciousness, you will have extremely high blood pressure, very low heart rate and ECG changes. Convulsions may also occur. When you stop breathing in Medical Carbon Dioxide, all these effects are reversed. Always follow prescribed instructions and seek medical advice if you feel unwell or think you may have taken too much Medical Carbon Dioxide.
